If you have tried marketing to grow your business, you know how overwhelming it can be. Fortunately, there are a few steps you can take to help you get started. Betsy Gray knows a thing or two about business growth through marketing. She is the founder and CEO of The Social Bullpen and has more than 20 years of experience under her belt. Today she is sharing some valuable insight.
Here are Betsy’s top three tips to grow your business through marketing.
1. Know your audience. We have discussed this often because it’s very important. Knowing your audience is a crucial part of any marketing plan. Understanding who you are trying to reach (and why you are trying to reach them) will allow you to target your message and platforms more effectively. You need to know as much about your audience as you can, including personalities, values, interests, and opinions. This key demographic information can help you develop audience personas, which will be essential to build marketing campaigns. Marketing research will help, so don’t skip that important step.
2. Know what sets you apart. What makes you different? What do you offer that your competitors can’t? Whether you have a product-based or a service-based business, differentiation is crucial. When you identify and communicate your unique qualities, you can make your product or service attractive to your target audience. (This is where market research and knowing your audience really comes into play!) Since you know your audience, you can determine how your business is distinctively equipped to solve their problems or answer their questions. Use that knowledge to stand out in the crowd!
3. Create and maintain your website and email list – they are all you own online. You know the importance of having a website. It is an essential part of your marketing plan. Not only is it the backbone of your business, a reflection of your brand online, and connected to everything, but your website (along with your email list) is the only thing you own online. Social media is important, but what if something happens to your social media accounts? You need your website and email list to continue to reach your audience or clients. Email marketing allows you to directly reach your clients or customers, to target messages, and to segment your customer lists. If you don’t already have a website and email list, this is a good time to get started.
Of course, there’s no magic pill for marketing success. You need a solid plan and a path to achieve it. Before you spend crucial resources on your marketing efforts, take the time to put these tips into practice.
